John Lackey Brown was born April 29, 1914, in Ilion, N. Y., to Leslie Beecher Brown, a businessman; and his wife, Katherine Lackey. He was educated at Hamilton College, the EĢcole des Chartes, the Sorbonne, and the Catholic University of America, from which he received his PhD in 1939. Dr. Brown was an instructor in Romance languages at Catholic University from 1939 to 1941.
